Description: The Bedrock Geology Data Set is a Geological map of the Province and shows the distribution of bedrock units underlying Ontario. It illustrates geological rock types, major faults, iron formations, Kimberlite Intrusions and dike swarms. The geology of the Province consists of Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield and Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks in basins that overlie the Canadian Shield. Based on differences in age, metamorphism and tectonic setting, the Precambrian rocks are subdivided into the Superior, Southern and Grenville provinces. The Phanerozoic rocks occur in four basins. Major faults and shear zones are also included. The legend is subdivided geochronologically in the Phanerozoic, but geochronometrically in the Proterozoic and Archean. The Archean rocks of the Superior Province are subdivided into lithologic units. Supracrustal units of the Southern Province and the Phanerozoic Eon are subdivided lithostratigraphically. The Grenville Province is subdivided into major tectonic blocks and within each block the legend is mainly lithologic, with only part of the supracrustal rock record subdivided into lithostratigraphic units. The dataset is an overview of this geology on a Provincial Compilation scale of 1:250 000 and it illustrates geological rock types, major faults, iron formations, kimberlite and dike swarms.

Description: The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is an Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) product originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data. We used the DCW 1993 version at 1:1,000,000 scale. The DMA data sources are aeronautical charts, which emphasize landmarks important from flying altitudes. This explains why there is a separate aeronautical theme with all conceivable airports, yet why on some themes small islands and lakes are simply unnamed points. ESRI, in compiling the DCW, also eliminated some detail and made some assumptions for handling tiny polygons and edgematching. Also, note that the completeness of the thematic categories present in each layer will vary. Please read the layer descriptions (through links in the following table).

Description: Here is the new edition of the first attempt to summarize the geology of Africa by presenting it in an atlas and to synthesize the stratigraphy, tectonics, economic geology, geohazards and geosites of each country and territory of the continent. Furthermore, the digitized geological maps are correlated and harmonized according to the current stratigraphic timetable. The atlas aims to contribute to capacity building in African Earth Sciences and to aid the initiation of research and enable the achievement of economic opportunities by providing a database of basic geological background information.

Description: This CD-ROM has been created as a companion to the 1996 printed Geological Map of Canada (Map 1860A).
The CD-ROM is not just a digital version of Map 1860A:
it contains a complete bilingual GIS spatial database from which a variety of thematic geological maps can be
created. Map 1860A is just one of those themes.
Included on the CD-ROM are all of the Arc/Info files used in the production of the printed map, including a
bilingual database. In addition, the data is provided in several
common interchange formats (*.E00, *.SHP).
This CD-ROM also includes a limited edition of SurView, a viewing application for Microsoft Windows,
developed at the Geological Survey of Canada and originally
released as GSC Open File 2661. Surview can display, print, and query the *.SHP files. This provides an
opportunity for those without specialized GIS software to delve
into the realm of digital geoscience data and explore the new Geological Map of Canada on their own PC

Description: Geological map of the Northern Territory
This map supplants the outdated 1:2.5 million map, published in 1976 and based on BMR first-generation 1:250k maps. A feature of the new map is the division of the Proterozoic into ten regionally identifiable and generally unconformable-bounded packages (P1-P10). Except for P10, which relates to Neoproterozoic, other packages do not correspond to the chrono-stratigraphic subdivisions recommended by the Subcommission on Precambrian Stratigraphy and these subdivisions are not used on the map. A convenient chronometric scale is used to define the boundaries of these packages. The Phanerozoic is subdivided according to the conventional geological time scale

Description: A Site District is a polygon feature that identifies a subdivision of a Site Region based on a characteristic pattern of physiographic features which distinguish fairly large areas from one another.
A Site Region is a polygon feature that identifies an area of land within which the response of vegetation to the features of landform follows a consistent pattern. Each specific type of land (defined in terms of the relief, texture and petrography of geologic materials, depth to bedrock and drainage conditions) within a specific region has its own characteristic plant succession.

Description: This product is a globally seamless adaptation of the U.S. Government's Digital Chart of the World (Vector Smart Map Level 0 [VMap0], Edition 5) produced by Global Mapping International in ESRI shapefile format, with added country polygons and updated first-level subdivisions of countries. The underlying Digital Chart of the World was developed by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency)of the U.S. government. GMI has merged the DCW into seamless, global shapefile layers (the original consists of four separate libraries, each divided into dozens of tiles).
GMI has also provided sample map project and layer files applying appropriate cartographic symbology to the complex classification system of VMap0). The VMap0 data was compiled from the Operational Navigational Chart (ONC) series of air navigation maps with a scale of 1:1,000,000.
Full information about VMAP Level 0, edition 5 is contained in MIL-PRF-89039 "PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION - VECTOR SMART MAP (VMap) Level 0" as amended (VMAP0_spec.pdf)
GMI has also provided sample map project and layer files applying appropriate cartographic symbology to the complex classification system of VMap 0 when using the shapefiles in ArcGIS version 8.3 and above.

Description: The Surficial Geology of Southern Ontario data set is a GIS based geological map that shows the distribution and characteristics of surficial units across Southern Ontario. It illustrates surficial deposits types, material types, geological features (i.e. drumlins, eskers) and general bedrock types and outcrops. The data used to generate the map was derived from Quaternary maps, primarily at a scale of 1:50,000, complied by the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) and the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) over the last 40 years. A total of 124 maps (36 belonging to the GSC) create this seamless coverage. (From: metadata page provided by Ministry of Northern Development and Mines)
The data is available on 2 CD-ROMs. CD 1 contains a complete set of data in geographic co-ordinates (decimal degrees, NAD 83); CD 2 contains the same information but in UTM, grid zones 17 and 18; and a pdf file of the Surficial Geology of Ontario map. Both CDs have a raster dataset (hillshade image) in jpeg format.

Description: The Tectonic Geology Data Set is a digital interpretation of the Tectonic Geology of the Province of Ontario, It illustrates this by 1) grouping volcanic and sedimentary rock units into tectonic assemblages in Precambrain terrains and depositional sequences in the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary basins; and 2) interpreting the ranges of emplacement ages of all major intrusions and grouping some plutons into suites. Among a range of tectonically significant features, the map also displays major folds, faults, stratigraphic younging directions, interpreted centres of volcanism and locations of U/Pb age determinations, which are numbered and cross-referenced to a table of ages. This map represents the first attempt internationally to subdivide Archean rock units into Tectonic assemblages, and the first attempt in Ontario to subdivide Paleozic and Mesozoic rock units into depositional sequences.
The purpose of this map is to portray the distribution of magmatism and sedimentation in time and space in the rock record of Ontario. The intended user is a geologist with an academic or applied mineral exploration interest in the components of the bedrock of Ontario that forms the basis of its geochronometric and tectonic record.
