Description: The National Topographic System (NTS) is a system of divisions used primarily for topographic maps of the Canadian landmass. Maps at the 1:250
000 scale are identified by a combination of numbers and letters from A to P (e.g. 13C). A map at the 1:50 000 scale corresponds to 1/16 of a map at the 1:250 000 scale, with each unit number from 01 to 16. Adding the unit number to the 1:250 000 number produces a unique identifier (e.g. 13C09).
The University of Toronto Map and GIS Collection now has
access to all NTDB datasets for Canada, including all sheets at
1:50000, 1:25000 for the topographic sets, the Digital Elevation Models and at
1:50000 for CanImage.
For more information please follow this

Description: The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is an Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) product originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data. We used the DCW 1993 version at 1:1,000,000 scale. The DMA data sources are aeronautical charts, which emphasize landmarks important from flying altitudes. This explains why there is a separate aeronautical theme with all conceivable airports, yet why on some themes small islands and lakes are simply unnamed points. ESRI, in compiling the DCW, also eliminated some detail and made some assumptions for handling tiny polygons and edgematching. Also, note that the completeness of the thematic categories present in each layer will vary. Please read the layer descriptions (through links in the following table).

Description: he Electronic Map covers the whole of England and Wales, and is organised by Ordnance Survey Sheet number. The map consists of scanned bitmap images of the Ordnance Survey one inch to the mile (1:63,360) New Popular Edition maps (1945-8) with National Grid. It contains the boundaries of some 18,233 places, and is arranged as three electronic 'layers'. The first is a scan of the Ordnance Survey maps stored as grey tone sheet images. This enables Ordnance Survey physical, cultural and place-name content to be readily visible in the background for orientation and general location purposes, while not obscuring the added boundary and reference number material. The second layer consists of the boundaries, stored as solid red lines; and the third layer contains the reference numbers that link places on the map to the gazetteer/metadata dataset that accompanies the maps.
The maps are available on CD-ROM in Adobe Illustrator™ v.6 (£45 plus P&P) or Adobe Acrobat PDF™ (£15 plus P&P). Adobe Illustrator format is recommended if you already have the software (as it enables you to edit the maps and select the layers to view). However, the Adobe Acrobat PDF format is perfectly suitable for viewing the maps, and the the necessary reader software will be supplied.

Description: This product is a globally seamless adaptation of the U.S. Government's Digital Chart of the World (Vector Smart Map Level 0 [VMap0], Edition 5) produced by Global Mapping International in ESRI shapefile format, with added country polygons and updated first-level subdivisions of countries. The underlying Digital Chart of the World was developed by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency)of the U.S. government. GMI has merged the DCW into seamless, global shapefile layers (the original consists of four separate libraries, each divided into dozens of tiles).
GMI has also provided sample map project and layer files applying appropriate cartographic symbology to the complex classification system of VMap0). The VMap0 data was compiled from the Operational Navigational Chart (ONC) series of air navigation maps with a scale of 1:1,000,000.
Full information about VMAP Level 0, edition 5 is contained in MIL-PRF-89039 "PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION - VECTOR SMART MAP (VMap) Level 0" as amended (VMAP0_spec.pdf)
GMI has also provided sample map project and layer files applying appropriate cartographic symbology to the complex classification system of VMap 0 when using the shapefiles in ArcGIS version 8.3 and above.

Description: This series was created to provide hard copy maps for the Ontario Base Mapping OBM program covering the Metro Toronto Region. Each map covers an area of 25 sq. km and shows topographic features with 5 metre contours. Buildings less than 100 sq. m. are symbolized, others are shown in outline, roads are pavement edges. 1 km. grid lines are of the Ontario Modified Transverse Mercator Projection.

Description: These profiles were developed to help government and community service agencies with their local planning, by providing socio-economic data at a meaningful geographic area. Not all people define “neighbourhoods” the same way. For the purposes of statistical monitoring however, these neighbourhoods were defined based on Statistics Canada census tracts. Census tracts include several city blocks and have on average about 4,000 people. Most service agencies have service areas that are defined by main streets, former municipal boundaries, or natural boundaries such as rivers. These service areas include several census tracts. It is not uncommon for service areas of community agencies to overlap. Choices about neighbourhood boundaries were made to make the data in the profiles useful to as many users as possible, and are not intended to be statements or judgements about where a neighbourhood starts or ends. The boundaries for these neighbourhoods were developed using the following criteria:
1) originally based on a Urban Development Services Residential Communities map, based on planning areas in former municipalities, and existing Public Health neighbourhood planning areas;
2) no neighbourhood be comprised of a single census tract;
3) minimum neighbourhood population of at least 7,000-10,000;
4) where census tracts were combined to meet criteria 2 or 3 above, they were joined with the most similar adjacent area according to % of the population living in low income households;
5) respecting existing boundaries such as service boundaries of community agencies, natural boundaries (rivers), and man-made boundaries (streets, highways, railway tracks);
6) maintaining neighbourhood areas small enough for service organizations to combine them to fit within their service area; and
7) the final number of neighbourhood areas be “manageable” for the purposes of data presentation and reporting.
