Canada Land Use Monitoring Program (CLUMP) (1966-1986)

Date: 1966-1986
Creator: Natural Resources Canada
Datum:
Projection: Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)
Scale: 1:50000
Access: web
Description:
From the web page: "The Canada Land Use Monitoring Program (CLUMP) was established in 1978 by the Lands Directorate of Environment Canada to provide researchers, planners and managers with a database on land use change. The program complemented the land capability and land use surveys of the Canada Land Inventory (CLI). However, most data sets associated with CLUMP were compiled at a higher level of detail than the CLI. Designed to monitor both spatially and sequentially land use change in various areas of Canada, the CLUMP program had the following objectives: 1) to provide improved awareness of the state of the land resource. 2) to identify land use trends of national and regional importance. 3) to determine major areas of rapid change that could potentially create land use problems. 4) to analyze land use change in terms of causes and consequences, particularly with respect to the impact of government policies and programs."

The Greenbelt Act, 2005 enables the creation of a Greenbelt Plan to protect about 1.8 million acres of environmentally sensitive and agricultural land in the Golden Horseshoe from urban development and sprawl. These data are made up of three categories: # Outer boundary and greenbelt designations (Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing) Includes boundaries for the protected country, the Oak Ridges Moraine and the Niagara Escarpment. # Greenbelt Natural Heritage System boundary (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources) Identifies areas of the Greenbelt Protected Countryside with the highest concentration of the most sensitive and/or significant natural features and functions as outlined in section 3.2 and schedule 4 of the Greenbelt Plan. Also includes the external connections layer which identifies the river valley connections references in section 3.2.5. These connections identify linkages beyond the Greenbelt Natural Heritage system through existing or approved urban areas to inland lakes and Lake Ontario.
