Description: The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is an Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) product originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data. We used the DCW 1993 version at 1:1,000,000 scale. The DMA data sources are aeronautical charts, which emphasize landmarks important from flying altitudes. This explains why there is a separate aeronautical theme with all conceivable airports, yet why on some themes small islands and lakes are simply unnamed points. ESRI, in compiling the DCW, also eliminated some detail and made some assumptions for handling tiny polygons and edgematching. Also, note that the completeness of the thematic categories present in each layer will vary. Please read the layer descriptions (through links in the following table).

Description: GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was derived from several raster and vector sources of topographic information. For easier distribution, GTOPO30 has been divided into tiles which can be selected from the map shown above. Detailed information on the characteristics of GTOPO30 including the data distribution format, the data sources, production methods, accuracy, and hints for users, is found in the GTOPO30 README file. See linked index for help in choosing an area.

Description: Demographic information is often provided on a
national basis, but global environmental and
other cross-disciplinary studies usually require
data that are referenced by geographic
coordinates, such as latitude and longitude,
rather than by political or administrative units. In
this Gridded Population of the World (GPW)
data set, the distribution of human population is
converted from national or subnational units to a
series of georeferenced quadrilateral grids.

Description: The Land Processes DAAC was established as part of
NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Data and
Information System (EOSDIS) initiative to process,
archive, and distribute land-related data collected by
EOS sensors, thereby promoting the inter-disciplinary
study and understanding of the integrated Earth system.
The role of the Land Processes DAAC includes the
processing and distribution of ETM+ data acquired by
Landsat 7, higher-level processing and distribution of
ASTER data, and the distribution of MODIS land
products derived from data acquired by the Terra and
Aqua satellites.

Description: The LandScan data set is a worldwide population database
compiled on a 30" X 30" latitude/longitude grid. Census counts
(mainly at sub-national level) were apportioned to each grid
cell based on probability coefficients, which are based on
proximity to roads, slope, land cover and nighttime lights.
LandScan 2000 has been developed as part of Oak Ridge
National Laboratory (ORNL) Global Population Project for
estimating ambient populations at risk. The LandScan files are
available on our ftp server in Band Interleaved by Line (BIL)
format by continent and in ESRI grid format for the world

Description: Most images on this CD-ROM are LANDSAT browse images, used to determine image
quality and cloud cover. These images
are subsampled at a ratio 16 to 1 and
have an effective resolution of 480
meters (approximately 3/10 of a mile
per pixel. JPEG image compression may degrade
some images to less than the subsampled resolution.
Full resolution images are 512X512 sections of Landsat scenes, with a
ground resolution of 30 meters. A high
quality JPEG image compression routine has been
used on these images to minimize image
quality degredation
