Digital Chart of the World ()

Date:
Creator: ESRI
Datum:
Projection:
Scale: 1:1000000
Access: Web
Description:
The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is an Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) product originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data. We used the DCW 1993 version at 1:1,000,000 scale. The DMA data sources are aeronautical charts, which emphasize landmarks important from flying altitudes. This explains why there is a separate aeronautical theme with all conceivable airports, yet why on some themes small islands and lakes are simply unnamed points. ESRI, in compiling the DCW, also eliminated some detail and made some assumptions for handling tiny polygons and edgematching. Also, note that the completeness of the thematic categories present in each layer will vary. Please read the layer descriptions (through links in the following table).

Demographic information is often provided on a national basis, but global environmental and other cross-disciplinary studies usually require data that are referenced by geographic coordinates, such as latitude and longitude, rather than by political or administrative units. In this Gridded Population of the World (GPW) data set, the distribution of human population is converted from national or subnational units to a series of georeferenced quadrilateral grids.

The LandScan data set is a worldwide population database compiled on a 30" X 30" latitude/longitude grid. Census counts (mainly at sub-national level) were apportioned to each grid cell based on probability coefficients, which are based on proximity to roads, slope, land cover and nighttime lights. LandScan 2000 has been developed as part of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Global Population Project for estimating ambient populations at risk. The LandScan files are available on our ftp server in Band Interleaved by Line (BIL) format by continent and in ESRI grid format for the world
